HISTORY: As mentioned before, Mugen grew up on a tiny island in Ryuukyuu. This particular island was designated for criminals, since Mukuro and Kouza say the three of them were born and raised on this island, we can assume that Mugen's parents (at least his mother) were a criminals. Whatever happened, from his profile it can also be assumed he was orphaned, or abandoned, at an early age. This is an island for of thieves and murderers, this is the environment Mugen grew up in and had to learn how to survive and take care of himself.
Being such, strength is very important to Mugen, as is the power to hold his life in his own hands. He purposely searches out fighters who may be stronger than him to test, and verify, his own strength. And should he die, he'd rather go down fighting.
His past on Ryuukyuu is a mystery, but it seems he befriends Kouza to an extent, but with her friendship comes her brother, Mukuro. Mukuro enlist Mugen's aid in his piracy. However, Mukuro (a strange name, since it means [corpse] in Japanese} betrays Mugen not once, but twice, furthering his belief that no one can be trusted or relied on.
With all this in mind, it's hard to say why he agreed to help Fuu and stick by her. Despite the tattoos that mark him as a criminal, Mugen is a man of his word. He puts his money where his mouth is. At the end of Champloo we see a more open Mugen. He realizes that he can honestly call these two people his friends. They don't look down on him for being RyuuKyuuan, or a criminal. He can fight back to back with Jin, and be assured Jin won't back stab him, and should he be hurt, he can rely on Fuu to nag, and nurse him, back to health. When Jin and Fee thought Mukuro had caused Mugen's death, it is who Jin agrees to kill Mukuro. On Ikitsuki Island, he risks his own life to go after Fuu and save her life. When they go their separate ways in the end, he decides he no longer has the desire to kill Jin (though Jin seems to be his equal in sword skills) and goes off on his own path.
