NIRAI KANAI Is the island from which all life in Okinawa is said to have come from. It is where the dead go to find eternal peace. Nirai Kanai means Paradise in Okinawan/Ryuukyuuan dialect. Both times Mugen has died, Ancestoral Spirits come to take him away to Nirai Kanai. These Spirits appear crow-like, in dark feathery garb and mask, some of which appear to be horned. In almost all mythology of the world, the crow/raven is associated with creation and/or death for/of mankind.

The Gwansu are Ancestral Spirits of ones household; and anyone can become a Futuki Ancestral Spirit. Futuki coincides with the sooroo, dead souls, and the gusoon'chu, people of the other world. Futuki can become kamis is they fit under the following categories: died at the age of 7 or older, at least one surviving relative to see to his funeral and grave site, and died a natural death. Unnatural deathes were considered as drowning, murder, disease, sucide, and burning. This information came from a long and detailed pdf article found here

So when Mugen is dying he sees birds. Both times, Mugen protests, and the spirits depart, allowing him to return from his body. the quote above says Wait...hey! I'm not ready to go yet.

Nirai Kanai is a world far out in the seas where gods exist. In this remote world is the origin of all riches; wealth, fertility and life. Go here for more. .

Mugen 'dies' about three times in Champloo depending on how you look at it. The first time was on Ryuukyuu, when he falls after recieving an injury to the shoulder area and collapses and sees the red faced bird. Seeing how that was a flashback we can't be certain. The second, that we know for sure, is after Mukuro betrays him for a second time and he is drowning. He demands that the Ancestoral Spirits let him go because he wasn't ready to die. The third time is after he kills Umanosuke and Tobe's wheelchair explodes. TheAncestral Spirits come to carry him away and he is prepared to accept death. However, as the crow-like birds lift him from his body, he hears Fuu calling his name, and his spirit is dropped back down to his body, whether that was the choice of the Spirits, or is own will. At the end of Champloo, when everyone is going their separate ways, a red-faced bird stares down at Mugen as he passes, flies off into the distance.
